What is covered by comprehensive home insurance?

Comprehensive Home Insurance can cover the building and/or the contents. It can be purchased with both covered under a single policy or separately.

How do you calculate the sum insured?

It is the customer’s responsibility, as the Policyholder, to determine the sum insured. What criteria can be used:

  • For the building, the reconstruction value of the property must be considered, defined in this case as the value of the specific unit and its share of the common areas; it must take into account the type and quality of the materials used and the finishes. Some multi-risk home insurance calculators allow you to calculate the base reconstruction value by taking into account the total area of the unit and its annexes, including the common areas.
  • For Contents: The sum insured must correspond to the cost of replacing the items with new ones as of the date of the policy. It must take into account: a) general items, such as furniture, appliances, decorative items, clothing, and various small items; b) special items, such as TVs, VCRs, stereo systems, and/or other audio equipment; cameras and video cameras; gold and precious metals; paintings and works of art, among others
  • It is suggested that the calculated value be increased from 10% to 15% as a safety margin.

What are the best tips to keep in mind when using a home insurance quote calculator?

  1. Required documentation: Gather all information about the property and obtain the property record from the tax agency’s website.
  2. Estimate the value of the contents per square foot and appraise your assets at today's costs.
  3. Assessing the necessary coverage: Is it worth including earthquake coverage? If you have a partner bank, be aware that this will be a requirement of the bank. And what about liability insurance? Which option should you choose, and what should the coverage amount be?
  4. Find out what the various warranties mean and how they benefit you.
  5. Verify that the capital sub-limits for each guarantee are sufficient to cover the loss incurred.
  6. Learn about the exclusions.
  7. Discounts: If you have a reinforced door, an alarm system connected to the police or a security company, or other major security installations, you are eligible for a special discount.
