Learn Everything About Life Insurance Before You Buy a Policy
Purchasing life insurance is an altruistic financial decision, but the process of selecting the best policy can be challenging.
It's important not to put off the decision to protect your family members or other beneficiaries. In this article, you'll learn why.

To make your decision easier, take note of what you should look for whenever you evaluate a proposal.
1. Compare like with like
It may seem redundant, but it's a common mistake.
Don't compare quotes based solely on the premium price. Make sure you're comparing similar products—with the same coverage and exclusions.
Whenever possible, make a simulation to understand the consequences of his decision.
For example, imagine a serious accident that results in death. If you have purchased all of EXS’s life insurance coverage options, your beneficiaries will receive:
- The amount covering death, accidental death, and death resulting from a traffic accident.
This means that the insured amount triples—since all three situations are covered under the policy.
2. Decide which coverages you want to include in your life insurance policy
Life insurance policies cover the risk of the insured person's death or survival. These are distinct types of coverage.
- Life Insurance: The insurance company pays the beneficiary the agreed-upon death benefit if the insured person dies during the term of the policy.
- Survival Risk Insurance: The insurance company pays the beneficiary the agreed-upon sum if the beneficiary is still alive at the end of the policy term. These policies are typically sought out by people looking to build up savings.
Life insurance may also include other supplemental coverages, such as disability—Absolute and Permanent or Total and Permanent—hospitalization, critical illnesses, or unemployment.
Before you start your research, clearly identify the coverage you want to purchase.
3. Be aware of waiting periods and exclusions
Generally, life insurance policies do not have waiting periods, except in cases of death by suicide (2 years).
Also be aware of the exclusions.
Participation in criminal acts, drug use, natural disasters, motorcycle accidents, and other situations may result in the insured amount under the life insurance policy not being paid out.
4. Determine the Insurance Coverage Amount
Every family has a unique financial situation.
One method for simplifying the calculation of the sum insured is to add up the largest and most significant costs, such as:
- Debts to the bank: mortgage, loans for the children's college education, credit card bills, etc.
- Income replacement: Consider the average life expectancy of the beneficiaries who depend on your salary.
- Funeral expenses and other related costs.
- Education: If you want to finance your children’s education, calculate the costs associated with an educational plan, taking into account the number of dependents and the expected time frames.
By keeping track of all current expenses and anticipating future situations, you can more effectively safeguard your household’s financial stability.
5. Be honest when filling out the medical questionnaire
Answer all questions honestly. Do not withhold information about your family history, pre-existing conditions, or unhealthy habits, as this could invalidate the policy.
If you want to negotiate and lower your premium, take preventive measures before purchasing life insurance. You can start exercising, eating healthier, quitting smoking, and taking many other steps that will help improve your medical evaluation results.
6. Look for an insurance company that offers guarantees
The purpose of life insurance is to provide financial protection for your beneficiaries when you are no longer here to help them.
Research and select an institution with an unquestionable reputation, one that offers guarantees and is financially stable.
The insurance company must be registered with the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority.
7. Don't wait too long
The younger you are, the lower the premium for life insurance, because the risks to the insurer are lower.
The law prohibits insurers from denying an application for life insurance based on disabilities or “aggravated health risk.” However, they may deny the application outright if you are over 60 years old.
In addition, the longer you wait, the greater the likelihood that you will develop a condition that could affect the amount of your premium.
